    The challenge

The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a 5km stretch of shared-use path running alongside the shoreline of Carlingford Lough, with sections being elevated above the walkway. Designed for pedestrians, cyclists, and a wide variety of public users, the route required a durable and low-maintenance GRP walkway solution that could withstand constant exposure to moisture and a challenging coastal environment.

The client had used a galvanised steel support structure to raise the path above water level. However, they needed a walkway system that wouldn’t corrode over time, remained safe under foot for all users, and could be supplied to bespoke sizes to suit the steel framework. In addition, the project also called for a grey finish, which is a colour we don’t typically specify for our GRP mini mesh products.

So, were we able to solve the client’s challenge?

    Our solution

Working closely with the client, we supplied GRP mini mesh walkway panels to form a robust, slip-resistant GRP walkway surface along the elevated sections of the greenway. We identified GRP mini mesh as the ideal choice due to its excellent slip resistance, open-mesh design, and suitability for public access areas with mixed footfall. Its non-corrosive properties also made it perfectly suited for long-term use in the waterside environment.

We supplied the GRP mini mesh in a bespoke grey finish to suit the client’s aesthetic requirements, which demonstrates our ability to adapt our standard offerings to meet specific client needs. All the panels were manufactured to bespoke sizes, allowing them to be quickly and easily installed onto the galvanised steel structure.

However, we encountered a problem with the fixing type after the GRP walkway had been installed, with high levels of traffic on the walkway causing some distortion to the mini mesh panels. Rather than offering a temporary workaround, our Operations Director, Glenn, attended the site personally to assess the issue. He then proposed a revised fixing solution that would perform reliably under long-term public use. This reinforces our ‘On Site & Right’ guarantee and our commitment to delivering lasting solutions, not quick fixes.

    The outcome

The completed Carlingford Lough Greenway now benefits from a safe and durable GRP pedestrian walkway that’s built to perform in a demanding coastal environment.

The client was particularly pleased with the ease of installation, the bespoke sizing of the GRP mini mesh panels, and our willingness to supply a non-standard colour to meet the project brief. Our proactive, hands-on response to the fixing issue further demonstrates our commitment to quality and long-term performance.
